TPS 20: The Primal SLEEP Shift

In this episode we discuss the first topic from our ‘Primal Shifts’ series: SLEEP.

Snooze time!

Snooze time!

In our modern world, many of us have sacrificed sleep in order to squeeze in as much activity into our lives as we possibly can. We have become over run with social media, smart phones and stress that keeps us wired long into the night.

This is one area we can see very clearly the difference between how our ancestors and even our great grandparents would have lived and now. When the sun was up, they hunted, gathered, played, socialised, when the sun went down they slept!

As we discussed recently in the Jimmy Moore guest host episode, sleep is one of the fundamental pillars of good health. Without good sleep, all other health goals (including weight loss) suffer.

You can check out our episode on Jimmy’s Livin La Vida Low Carb Show here where we introduce our seven Primal Shifts. We will be covering each of these shifts individually in future episodes.

During this episode we talk about:

  • The impact of the female menstrual cycle on sleep
  • Exercise and sleep
  • Charby’s recent sleep reduction experiment
  • Stress and sleep
  • How light (including sunlight) impacts on sleep quality
  • Blue Blocker glasses
  • Each Primal Shifter’s day and night routine
  • Meditation
  • Over hacking our sleep
  • Black out blinds for the bedroom
  • Circadian Rhythm
  • Seasonality of Sleep
  • Primal Hit or Shit: Sleep Apps!
  • Caffeine and sleep

Thanks Crystal, Jo and Charby. I’ve been meaning to check out your podcasts since I met Charby at the Food and Mood Wellbeing Seminar at the beginning of the month. I loved listening to your discussion, facts, personal stories and tips. It all really resonated with me. Thanks again. Time to hit the sack…
